The
history of the breed
The history of the
breed, some say, the breed first appeared in Japan around 732, and others
say the ancestors of the chin to breeds of Chinese origin. Sailors
introduced the breed to Europe in the 1600’s. An American naval officer
helped make this dog famous in England in 1853 and later after giving a pair
to the president of the United States made the breed’s appearance in the
USA. Prior to this the dogs were kept and closely guarded and were allowed
to be in possession of royalty and the commoner was severely punished if
found to have this dog in their possession.
Japanese Chins
stand about 8-11 inches in height and weigh 4 to 15 lbs. They have straight
silky long hair that is often black and white or red and white. Their faces
have an “oriental” appearance, with a short upturned muzzle and large, wide
set eyes that have white visible in the inner corners, creating astonished
expression. These dogs have a white spot or blaze in the middle of their
foreheads, known as the Buddha’s Thumbprint which can be attributed to a
Buddhist Emperor, who owned many of these dogs.
The breed is
considered one of the most cat-like of the dogs breeds in attitude: it is
alert, intelligent and often independent and uses its paws to clean its
face. It is loving and loyal to its owner. Chins prefer family
surroundings. They are a quiet breed, with a deeper bark then the high
pitched yap commonly associated with many toy breeds. |
